The Story of Medicines features six interpretive exhibits that explore the world of pharmacy within an interpretive center at the University of British Columbia’s Pharmaceutical Sciences building. In addition to creating a fun, engaging, and immersive space, the goals of the interpretive centre were also to educate the public about pharmacy, create a destination for the school community, facilitate networking, and recruit students to the Pharmaceutical Sciences department.

The Impact Media Wall, a 26 x 7 foot dynamic projection wall, entices visitors from the front door and hooks their interest with tidbits of regularly updated information about the world of pharmacy.  If visitors are curious to learn more, they head up to the heart of the experience in the mezzanine where the back wall features two 5 x 7 foot multi-touch screens. Displaying stunning life-size imagery, The Journey of a Drug exhibit vibrantly illustrates how specific medicines work within the human body.  The Role of Pharmacy showcases the significant contributors to pharmacy and the various roles they play in the industry. Between the two touch walls, The Life of a Drug exhibit educates visitors at an interactive touch table featuring a timeline of the history of six drugs that changed the world, from penicillin to birth control.

Two exhibits focus on connecting the school with the community. The Alumni Yearbook is a digital twist on the typical wall of class photos or printed yearbook: visitors can explore alumni year by year, search for specific graduates, explore an interactive map of ‘where are they now?’, and even add their own stories. Visitors can also share their experience with friends and family via the Social Media Kiosk.

Teaming up with the design firm SmartDesign Group to create The Story of Medicines was a joy for NGX. “Playing with UBC and SmartDesign on this project was tremendously fun”, says Leigh Byblow, CEO and Chief Creative Technologist at NGX. “Our team worked exceptionally hard on this project and we’re very proud of the results. To receive recognition like this makes it even more gratifying!”
