A tech-enhanced castle visit

Craigdarroch Castle
Augmented reality interpretive tablet tour

Victoria, Canada

Overview

Our augmented reality (AR) tour enhances visitors’ experience at Craigdarroch Castle. Historic characters guide visitors through spaces that come to life in AR. Unobtrusive in the historic setting, the tablet-based experience uses animation, photography, and audio vignettes to tell stories about gender, class, and architecture. A window into the Castle’s opulent material and social history, the digital tour offers a rich and engaging self-directed experience.

A Colourful History Come to Life

When ngx began research into the Castle, our team was introduced to a cast of characters whose legacy is interwoven with Victoria’s colonial history. We also found painstakingly restored interiors, hidden basement structures, and fragments of a bygone era scattered through the Castle. Each structural element, object, and character had a story to tell—built around the Castle’s historic inhabitants. Spoken audio performances breathe life into the characters.
