Perlan Interactive Nature Museum: Educational Augmented Reality Viewers

Augmented reality opens new ecological windows

Reykjavík, Iceland

Overview

For the Perlan Exploratorium in Reykjavik, we developed an augmented reality (AR) exhibit that transports visitors to Iceland's iconic Látrabjarg sea-cliffs.

We carefully prototyped a massive replica of the cliffs to develop connections between fixed AR viewers and digitally embedded content in the cliff-face. Visitors “bird-watch” through the AR viewers, triggering animated vignettes that make complex biological stories accessible and poignant.

Beautiful animation combined with technical precision brings the coastal ecology to life.

Comprised of three pairs of digital binoculars, the exhibit provides visitors with views of life on the Látrabjarg sea-cliffs, an otherwise inaccessible environment.

With nine stories for visitors to activate, each viewing station explores the cliff face from a different angle. Each story leverages rich animation to depict the complex social and biological moments that bring the cliff’s ecosystems to life.
