Easing the hospital waiting room experience

BC Children’s Hospital – Virtual Aquarium
An animated underwater world responds to movements in a clinical setting

Vancouver, Canada

Overview

As part of our patient wellness work, ngx brought the ocean into the Emergency Room at a children’s hospital. Animated sea creatures react to visitors’ movements via touchless interactions that are enabled by camera vision. Designed in close collaboration with patient groups, the responsive marine environment eases the waiting room experience for patients, parents, and antsy siblings. The whole interface is scrubbable and designed to exceed the health and safety parameters that the clinical setting demands.

Diving Into the Waiting Room

Between one and six visitors can interact with a visually appealing depiction of a marine environment display on a interlocking set of nine 46” screens. Through a series of prototyping and assessments, the ngx team interrogated assumptions about visitors’ expectations for the experience. Our approach ensured the production successfully met the needs of the hospital environment, its patients, and staff.
