Art that takes flight

Oakridge Park – Kio’s Wall
Augmented Reality Brand Activation and Physical Design

Vancouver, Canada

Overview

Kio’s wall is an enthralling interactive art installation where visitors blend the tactile joy of origami with a delightful flourish of augmented reality. The experience is central to the stunning revamp of Oakridge Centre—Canada’s largest redevelopment project, uniting retail, public art, cultural programming, and community experiences in a vibrant gathering space.

Guests first fold a souvenir paper hummingbird. Then, on their smartphone, they release a digital version who morphs into a gorgeous 3D animated hummingbird who flits about and changes colour with a single tap. The elegant transformation is an experience that inspires joy, leaving guests with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Elegant creativity

The origami hummingbird needed to be simple enough for a wide range of ages to fold while preserving the integrity of the design. Through multiple rounds of testing, we refined both the folds and instructions to strike the right balance between creativity and accessibility. The paper was carefully designed to reflect the brand’s refined aesthetic. The augmented reality hummingbirds—both origami-inspired and watercolour—were designed to blend realism with artistic expression, creating moments of joy and wonder while seamlessly extending the experience.

The origami folding and augmented reality experience were integrated into a larger physical installation, with over 200ft of bespoke wallpaper, large custom designed 3D-printed origami hummingbirds sculptures, and an artistic 3D organic interpretation of the Oakridge logo creating a stunning centerpiece for the experince. Our team worked closely with our fabrication partners and client through an iterative design process to extract a beautiful physical experince to complement the augmented reality perfectly.
