Activating ancient stories and spaces

Qasr al Hosn
Interpretive media displays

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Overview

ngx joined an international team entrusted to restore the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi—the fort at Qasr Al Hosn. Working alongside Barker Langham, we created a series of digital experiences that introduce audiences to the Bedu tribe’s way of life, the evolution of Abu Dhabi, and the birth of a nation. We animated large-scale projections for the fort’s walls, created immersive soundscapes for the galleries, and developed
bilingual interactives.

Historic Voices Come to Life

To successfully translate the historical source material into powerful immersive events, we substantively engaged with a whole lexicon of intangible cultural heritage—the ancient ways, expressions, and knowledge of Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Bu Falah and the Bani Yas confederacy. The process required us to invest time early in the project, to build trust, and to clarify requirements for work that addressed a complex and culturally nuanced subject matter.

We offer modern audiences a compelling invitation to engage with history by creatively using contemporary media to activate the ancient space and bring the region’s storied past to life.
