Overview
FUTURES was the Smithsonian’s first major building-wide exploration of the future and reopened the institution’s oldest museum for the first time in nearly two decades. The part-exhibition, part-festival, which opened in November 2021 and ran until July, 2022, celebrated the Smithsonian’s 175th anniversary with 32,000 sq. ft. and featured more than 150 awe-inspiring objects, ideas, prototypes and installations that fused art, technology, design and history to help visitors imagine many possible futures on the horizon.

Partnering with Autodesk, ngx’s work showcased how AI can help people to work through optimization problems, balancing diverse priorities. This exhibit seeks to foster dialogue between visitors, engaging them in compromise and collaboration, and challenging them to harness the insights that AI can provide in order to build a thriving urban future for all of the city’s stakeholders
Future Communities was an interactive experiment exploring how multiple stakeholders with different objectives and limited resources can collaborate and make trade-offs that lead to greener cities, commercial vibrancy, efficient spaces for people to live and work, and fair distribution of services to all residents.
